Chapter Sixteen

It was like the gargoyles had spent the entire day waiting for the very last bits of sunlight to disappear. Once she thought about it, Elmhurst realized that was exactly what the pair were doing. Now that they could get off their pedestals, all day would have become a tense waiting game for them.

They used to just sit at their posts miserably, knowing it was all they had in their entire existence. They had been crafted to sit there and had remained stuck in place for as long as the academy had stood. Hundreds of years, constantly turning seasons, merciless weather, and countless students had defined a life that hadn’t truly been a life. Dan and Steve were simply animated statues with nothing else to look forward to.

Every day, all they could do was watch the students who would come close enough to the library for the gargoyles to see them and overhear gossip of what was happening on campus. Their only fulfillment and purpose had been in reporting to the professors, or to the headmistress, anything they discovered about rule-breaking or misbehavior.

Not anymore. When Mia released them, she had changed everything. It wasn’t intentional. The young halfling was powerful, but there was no way for her to have known such a thing was even possible. Yet the compassion and desperate hope she had felt for the two gargoyles had somehow done what nobody had ever thought of. And in doing so, she had changed their reality forever.

Professor Elmhurst didn’t know how to respond to their transformation, or what those changes meant for Dan and Steve. It was possible the effect of the release was only temporary. They could land back on their pedestals and be attached to them again. They could be free for a day, only to discover the effect gone when they tried to fly away the next night.

So far, that hadn’t happened. But they weren’t completely free. The gargoyles had limitations to their ability to leave their posts, and they complied without objection.

Every night, as soon as the last of the sun’s rays disappeared beyond the horizon, they were released from their pedestals and free to fly around. They took to the skies and soared around campus, peering into windows and exploring hidden corners they never knew existed. But the moment the first light of morning returned to the sky, they had to be back in their places.

At first, it appeared they were merely doing what she asked and not forgetting their duty to be in their places and guard the library. But it didn’t take long for Elmhurst to wonder if there was something more going on. Dan and Steve were committed to the academy, but at the same time, this was their first taste of freedom. She had expected them to remain away from their positions, at least a few times, for longer than she required them to, or even just not return one morning.

She had to admit, she was a little bit afraid they may not return from one of their adventures.
